Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre in Chowara, Kerala, stands as a beacon of authentic Ayurvedic healing, carrying forward a remarkable legacy that spans over four centuries. The origins of this esteemed institution trace back to Dr. Franklin’s forefathers, who devoted their lives to serving the local community through traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Born into this illustrious lineage, Dr. Franklin grew up immersed in the principles and practices of Ayurveda. After completing his degree and postgraduate studies in the same field, he joined the Kerala Government’s health services and rose to the position of Chief District Medical Officer. Following his voluntary retirement, Dr. Franklin worked as a physiotherapist for the Qatar football team, where he discovered the immense global potential of Ayurveda. Inspired by this experience, he returned to Kerala and established his first Ayurveda centre at Hotel Neptune in 1980, introducing both Indian and international guests to the rejuvenating and preventive powers of Ayurveda. The realisation of Dr. Franklin’s lifelong dream took shape in 1997 with the inauguration of Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre, an exclusive Ayurvedic facility located in the serene coastal village of Chowara. Registered as Ribis Health Care Pvt. Ltd., the centre was founded under the visionary leadership of Dr. Franklin and the able directorship of Dr. Sony Joseph, who continues to guide the institution with a commitment to excellence and authenticity. Since its inception, the centre has established itself as one of Kerala’s most reputed destinations for genuine Ayurvedic treatments, blending traditional wisdom with modern hospitality. Dr. Sony Joseph, a senior consultant with over 15 years of experience in Ayurveda and Panchakarma therapies, has been leading the centre since 2004. Supporting him is a team of highly qualified doctors, including Dr. Soumya Franklin (daughter of Dr. Franklin), Dr. Ajith Kumar, Dr. Udayashanker, Dr. Janadathan, and Dr. Ratheesh. This team of dedicated physicians ensures that every treatment is tailored to meet each guest’s unique health needs, with the goal of achieving complete balance of body, mind, and spirit. To maintain the purity and efficacy of treatments, the institute produces its own Ayurvedic oils and herbal formulations in a dedicated medicine-manufacturing unit, supplemented by a well-stocked pharmacy sourcing products from trusted Ayurvedic suppliers across Kerala. The centre’s focus on holistic wellness extends beyond therapies to encompass every aspect of the guest experience. A variety of traditional Ayurvedic treatments are offered, including rejuvenation therapies, Marma massages, facial treatments, Yoga, and meditation, each carefully designed to promote healing, relaxation, and spiritual harmony. The therapies are complemented by a serene ambience and personalised care, ensuring a transformative and authentic Ayurveda journey. Accommodation at Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute combines comfort with traditional elegance. The centre features 69 well-appointed rooms spread across two wings, offering a range of options from standard and deluxe rooms to spacious cottages with private patios and garden views. The new wing features 24 deluxe rooms with beautiful pool views, while the original section retains 30 rooms that reflect Kerala’s architectural charm. Additionally, 15 new cottages have been added to enhance the experience of privacy and tranquillity. With its deep-rooted heritage, professional expertise, and unwavering dedication to authenticity, Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre remains a pioneering force in Ayurvedic healing. The meals are customised according to every guest’s unique body constitution or Prakrithi, making food an integral part of the healing process rather than just a source of sustenance.

The dining philosophy at the centre embodies Ayurveda’s core belief that food itself is medicine. Herbal teas, natural juices, and Ayurvedic decoctions are served throughout the day, enhancing metabolism, supporting detoxification, and promoting vitality.

Central to this approach is the understanding that each individual’s wellness depends on their unique Prakrithi, or constitutional type. The Ayurvedic doctors at Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute carefully assess each guest to create tailored diet charts that align with their health goals and body type. The in-house restaurant, operated under medical supervision, ensures that every dish served adheres to Ayurvedic principles while maintaining exquisite taste and freshness.

At the core of the centre’s philosophy lies a deep respect for Ayurveda as a complete way of life. The treatments encompass a wide range of healing approaches, including Panchakarma detoxification, rejuvenation therapies, Marma massages, spine and joint care, weight management, stress relief, and beauty enhancement programs. Each therapy is conducted by skilled Ayurvedic doctors and trained therapists in a peaceful, hygienic environment that promotes deep relaxation and renewal.

A hallmark of Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute is its unwavering commitment to quality and purity. The centre has its own Ayurvedic pharmacy and medicine-manufacturing unit, where traditional oils, herbal formulations, and decoctions are prepared under expert supervision to ensure efficacy and authenticity. Additional ingredients are sourced from trusted Ayurvedic suppliers, ensuring that only the highest-quality herbs are used in treatments. Separate therapy rooms for male and female guests provide privacy and comfort, enhancing the overall healing experience.

Complementing these therapies are daily yoga and meditation sessions, thoughtfully integrated to harmonise the body, mind, and soul. Guided by experienced instructors, these sessions help guests deepen their awareness, improve flexibility, and cultivate inner calm. The ancient synergy between Ayurveda and Yoga is honoured here, blending physical postures, breathing techniques, and mindfulness practices to elevate holistic well-being.

Beyond therapy, the centre serves as a sanctuary for complete rejuvenation. Guests are encouraged to adopt Ayurvedic lifestyle habits through personalised dietary guidance and wellness education. Soundarya Vardhini (Beauty Care)

This approach to beauty transcends mere cosmetic enhancement; it's about nurturing the body, mind, and soul in harmony with nature. Central to Ayurvedic beauty care is the belief that our external appearance is a reflection of our internal state of being. By understanding and balancing the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—individual constitutions in Ayurveda, one can tailor beauty routines to address specific needs and imbalances. Ayurvedic beauty rituals encompass a wide array of practices, from herbal skincare treatments and oil massages to dietary recommendations and meditation techniques. Herbal ingredients like turmeric, neem, sandalwood, and amla are prized for their rejuvenating properties and are commonly used in Ayurvedic skincare preparations. Massage, known as Abhyanga, is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic beauty care. It not only nourishes the skin but also stimulates the body's vital energy, promoting relaxation and overall well-being. Similarly, Ayurvedic dietary guidelines emphasize the importance of consuming fresh, whole foods that are in harmony with one's constitution. Unlike many mainstream beauty products that may contain harsh chemicals, Ayurvedic beauty care emphasizes natural, plant-based ingredients that work synergistically with the body's own healing mechanisms. This approach not only enhances physical beauty but also fosters a deeper connection to oneself and the natural world. In essence, Ayurvedic beauty care offers a holistic path to radiant health and timeless beauty, celebrating the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. By embracing the principles of Ayurveda, individuals can cultivate beauty that emanates from a place of balance, vitality, and inner harmony.

Stress Management

Central to Ayurveda is the concept of doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which represent individual constitutional types. By identifying one's unique doshic balance, Ayurvedic practitioners tailor treatments to restore equilibrium and alleviate stress. Herbal remedies play a prominent role in Ayurvedic stress management. Adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha, brahmi, and tulsi are revered for their ability to modulate the body's stress response, promoting resilience and relaxation. These herbs are often prescribed in formulations known as rasayanas, which support overall well-being and vitality. Dietary modifications form another cornerstone of Ayurvedic stress management. Emphasizing whole, seasonal foods that align with one's dosha, Ayurveda recommends nourishing, easily digestible meals to support physical and mental balance. Additionally, incorporating spices like turmeric, ginger, and cumin can enhance digestion and reduce inflammation, which are closely linked to stress. Lifestyle adjustments are integral to Ayurvedic stress management. Practices such as yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation are prescribed to calm the mind, cultivate awareness, and release tension stored in the body. Daily routines, known as dinacharya, help establish stability and consistency, fostering a sense of grounding amidst life's challenges. Furthermore, Ayurvedic therapies such as abhyanga (oil massage), shirodhara (warm oil poured over the forehead), and swedana (herbal steam therapy) offer profound relaxation and rejuvenation, promoting deep-seated stress relief. In essence, Ayurvedic treatment for stress management transcends symptom suppression to address the root causes of stress, guiding individuals towards a state of harmony and vitality. By integrating herbal remedies, dietary adjustments, lifestyle modifications, and therapeutic practices, Ayurveda offers a holistic path towards resilience, balance, and inner peace.

Panchakarma

A Panchakarma retreat is a deeply transformative Ayurvedic detox and healing program designed to eliminate accumulated toxins, restore internal balance, and rejuvenate the body and mind. Rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda, Panchakarma meaning “five actions” is a medically guided process that works at a cellular level to remove toxins (Ama), strengthen digestion (Agni) and balance the three doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Unlike modern detox programs or wellness retreats that focus only on relaxation, a Panchakarma retreat is a structured therapeutic process aimed at long-term health, disease prevention and complete physiological reset. In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, the body is constantly exposed to stress, processed foods, environmental pollutants and irregular routines. These factors weaken digestion and lead to the accumulation of Ama, a toxic byproduct that obstructs bodily channels and disrupts normal functioning. Over time, this imbalance manifests as fatigue, weight gain, poor digestion, hormonal issues, joint pain, skin disorders, and mental stress. A Panchakarma retreat addresses these root causes by mobilising and eliminating toxins from deep tissues, allowing the body to restore its natural intelligence and healing capacity. A traditional Panchakarma treatment follows a carefully structured three-stage process to ensure safety and effectiveness. The first stage, known as preparation (Purva Karma), involves therapies such as Snehana (internal and external oiling) and Swedana (herbal steam therapy), which help loosen and mobilise toxins from the tissues. The second stage, the main detox phase (Pradhana Karma), includes specialised treatments such as Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enemas), Nasya (nasal detox), and in specific cases, Vamana or Raktamokshana. These therapies are selected based on individual diagnosis and are performed under the supervision of qualified Ayurvedic doctors. The final stage, rejuvenation (Paschat Karma), focuses on restoring strength, rebuilding immunity, and stabilising the body through herbal medicines, a specialised Ayurvedic diet, and lifestyle guidance. A Panchakarma retreat offers a wide range of benefits that go beyond physical detoxification. It improves digestion and metabolism, supports sustainable weight management, enhances immunity, reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep quality, and promotes clearer skin and increased energy levels. One of the most profound effects of Panchakarma is its impact on mental clarity and emotional balance. As toxins are eliminated from the body, the nervous system becomes more stable, allowing the mind to shift from a state of stress to a state of calm and focus. Many individuals experience a deep sense of reset, both physically and mentally, after completing a Panchakarma program. When choosing a Panchakarma retreat, location plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of the treatment. A Panchakarma retreat in Kerala, India is widely considered the most authentic and effective option due to its strong Ayurvedic lineage, ideal tropical climate, and access to medicinal herbs. Kerala is home to highly trained BAMS-certified Ayurvedic doctors who follow classical treatment protocols, ensuring a medically accurate and personalised approach. The warm and humid climate of Kerala supports detoxification by opening the body’s channels, making treatments more effective compared to colder regions. For this reason, Kerala has become the global centre for authentic Panchakarma therapy. Across India, Panchakarma retreats are available in various formats, ranging from traditional Ayurvedic hospitals to luxury wellness resorts. While India offers a wide range of options, the quality and authenticity of treatment can vary significantly, making it important to choose centres that provide personalised care and medical supervision. A Panchakarma retreat in Sri Lanka offers a similar tropical environment and is emerging as a destination for Ayurvedic healing, often combining traditional therapies with a more relaxed retreat experience. Meanwhile, a Panchakarma retreat in Bali is popular for its scenic beauty and luxury wellness offerings, although treatments may be adapted and may not always follow classical Ayurvedic protocols as practised in India. A typical Panchakarma retreat includes an initial consultation with an Ayurvedic doctor, personalised treatment planning, daily therapies, herbal medications, and a specialised Ayurvedic diet designed to support detoxification. Many retreats also incorporate yoga, meditation, and lifestyle guidance to enhance overall well-being. The duration of a Panchakarma program can vary depending on individual health goals, with 7-day programs offering mild detox, 14-day programs providing moderate cleansing, and 21 to 28-day programs delivering deep detoxification and long-term healing benefits. For chronic conditions and deeper imbalances, longer programs are generally recommended. Choosing the right Panchakarma retreat is essential for achieving safe and effective results. A genuine retreat should offer qualified Ayurvedic doctors, personalised treatment protocols, daily medical supervision, authentic Panchakarma therapies, and a structured dietary plan. It is important to understand that Panchakarma is not a spa treatment or a relaxation package—it is a medical healing process rooted in Ayurvedic science. A Panchakarma retreat is ultimately an investment in long-term health and well-being. It is ideal for individuals seeking to address chronic health issues, improve digestion, reduce stress, enhance immunity, or simply reset the body and mind. By removing deep-rooted toxins and restoring balance, Panchakarma allows the body to function optimally and maintain a state of natural harmony. Whether you choose a Panchakarma retreat in Kerala, India, Sri Lanka, or Bali, the experience offers a powerful opportunity to reconnect with your health, restore vitality, and experience true holistic healing.

14 Nights Panchakarma program

The Panchakarma Program at Dr. Franklin’s Panchakarma Institute and Research Centre offers a profound therapeutic journey rooted in the ancient principles of Ayurveda. Designed to detoxify, rejuvenate, and revitalise the body, mind, and spirit, this program follows a meticulous sequence of treatments under the expert supervision of experienced Ayurvedic physicians. Each therapy is tailored to the individual’s body constitution (Prakriti) and health condition, ensuring a deeply personalised healing experience. The process begins with Purvakarma (preparatory procedures) that include Snehana (internal and external oleation) and Swedana (sudation), preparing the body for the main cleansing therapies. The Pradhanakarma (main procedures) – Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal therapy), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting) – are then administered to expel accumulated toxins and restore the balance of the three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. The final stage, Paschatkarma (post-therapy care), includes dietary adjustments, rejuvenating herbal medicines, and lifestyle recommendations to help sustain the benefits of cleansing. Conducted in a serene healing environment with the use of medicated oils and herbal preparations made from freshly sourced ingredients, the Panchakarma Program at Dr. Franklin’s not only eliminates toxins but also revitalises tissues, enhances energy, and promotes overall harmony between body and mind.

Weight Management

Central to Ayurvedic philosophy is the concept of doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – which represent different combinations of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether) present in each individual. According to Ayurveda, imbalances in these doshas can contribute to weight gain and other health issues. To address weight management concerns, Ayurveda advocates for personalized approaches tailored to an individual's unique constitution, or Prakriti. By identifying one's dominant dosha and understanding its influence on their physical and mental attributes, Ayurvedic practitioners can recommend specific dietary guidelines, lifestyle modifications, and herbal supplements to restore balance and support weight loss. Dietary adjustments in Ayurvedic weight management often involve incorporating whole, nutrient-dense foods that align with one's dosha. For example, those with a predominantly Kapha constitution may benefit from lighter, spicier foods to stimulate metabolism, while individuals with a Pitta imbalance might focus on cooling, hydrating foods to soothe inflammation and aid digestion. In addition to dietary changes, lifestyle modifications play a crucial role in Ayurvedic weight management. Practices such as mindful eating, regular exercise tailored to one's dosha, stress reduction techniques like yoga and meditation, and adequate sleep are emphasized to promote overall well-being and sustainable weight loss. Furthermore, Ayurvedic herbs and formulations are often utilized to support the body's natural detoxification processes, improve digestion, boost metabolism, and enhance energy levels. Commonly used herbs include triphala, guggul, ashwagandha, and turmeric, among others, each chosen for its specific properties and benefits in aiding weight management. Overall, Ayurvedic weight management offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to achieving a healthy weight and promoting overall wellness. By addressing the root causes of weight gain and restoring balance within the body, Ayurveda supports individuals in reaching their weight loss goals while nurturing their physical, mental, and spiritual health for long-term vitality and well-being.

When I got a burn out my friend advised me to go for 21 days in Dr Franklin. I have to say my trust to her was 100% thats why I didnt ask nothing about the methods. I got all I had to get in order to became quickly ballaced again. Trust this people doing everything you dont understand at beginning but they do it honestly and having a vision how to help you. They see imediately whats going wrong in your mind, body and soul and then give you individualy a PROGRAM. Honestly, it was also hard at the beginnig with some massages, as I wanted to loose weight but after 21 day I was like a new born or renovated in my mind, body and soul! What a change in the mirror looking at my face!!! And loosing 5 kg was a great pleasure. I would recomend to everybody to go ones par year there and bring yourself in balance. Trust them 100%, they just renovate you. Be thankfull, as they working so hard for us. Thank you Dr Franklin! You gave to me and many other clients so much HEALTH back and LOVE! But mostly important the new, fresh, healthy begin.

I have been in Franklin's for 8 days to spend a month. Everyone takes great care of us. Professionalism, kindness, a little paradise. The program includes at least 4 hours every day during which we are taken care of: applications, massages, everything that panchakarma includes, personalized for each person. I see the doctor every day to take stock of the progress of the care and there is someone on call at any time if necessary. The taxi from the center waited for me at the airport at 3am. I came alone. No problem. No problem.

This is my third time here, I have been here once every year for 14 days each time and leave like a shiny new car each time :-) The Treatments and diet etc is recommended after the Ayurvedic doctors do a thorough examination and tailor make the healing plan. The treatments involve natural ayurvedic medications, intense massages and oil treatments, steam baths etc. The above treatments are coordinated with a bespoke diet based on your dosha and the in-house restaurant - prepares the meals which are catered specifically to your recommended ayurvedic make-up. There is plenty of fresh fruits, juices, teas, lots and lots of vegetarian dishes and the staff is very helpful and friendly. Amongst them they speak many languages like spanish, french, russian and almost everyone speaks english (maybe not most proficiently ) Accommodation is well considered and has few options, there are traditional style huts and cottages with or without ACs or more modern executive rooms facing a private pool. All accommodation s come with ensuite, everything is cleaned daily and again, staff are friendly and accommodating. I prefer to stay in the old wing which has the traditional cottages as its made of traditional architecture with teak and red wood panels etc and lots of greenery around. There is also 1 hour morning yoga classes complimentary, my teacher this time was Mr Mohan and being off season I had him teaching me all to myself, learnt so much about Hatha yoga. One must show patience and discipline to get best results while under the treatments, after having made my third trip, I have come to respect the process of Ayurveda, it seems to be a corrective process and shows benefits over long term, also its focuses on our diet and food habits and encourages an over all correction and not just in the body but also in lifestyle, letting go of bad habits, respecting the recovery process of our body.
